for J.C.S.
we snuggle up like teddy bears
when it’s cold outside and we are warm
like puppies, weak, a week old,
wiggling, snuggling, needing other puppies
we echo each other like notes
hollered into the hollow of a cave
mystery alone, able to explain
what poems cannot
