A Bite Out of Silence

how can you allow a piano
to just drop dead

fingers and feet unavailable
to make it make music

black and white keys, like teeth
meeting silence, listening ears

I know this piano
has seen better days

had its hay day a long time ago
hay day, a long way away

like an old black dog
hardly able now to bark or to bite

a poet too shall go this way
shall be this way one day
