she was going to stand upon the snails
stand upon them or stomp upon them
she was going to break their houses in
break their houses down
she was going to crack up,
crack through their shells
get at the life in them, at the light in them
she was going to snuff their candles out
she was going to end Mass
snails were attending
what if they were worshiping
what if prayers or hymns were in their jaws
she was going to break their jaw bones

these ones or their grand or great grandparents
she was going to prevent these ones
having great grandchildren
her weight, so much greater than snails weigh
her house stronger than the one
within which snails abide
she was going to stand upon them
rub them- wipe her feet upon them
dirty the bottom of her shoes
with snail meat, snail shells, snail slime
she was going to enjoy the music
that she made - but then decided
oh maybe not on Sunday
maybe not in front of guests
she was entertaining
three poets who dropped in
who happened by
