Cats Meow
for D.D. & D.B.A. & P.A.

i.
you must claim your debt
as well as and as willingly
as you claim your reward

must claim death as willingly
as you claim your life

your darkness as willingly
as you claim your light

ii.
she was going to stand upon the snails
stand upon them or stomp upon them

she was going to break their houses in
break their houses down

she was going to crack up,
crack through their shells
get at the life in them, at the light in them

she was going to snuff their candles out
she was going to end Mass
snails were attending

what if they were worshiping
what if prayers or hymns were in their jaws

she was going to break their jaw bones
while they prayed

they could go to heaven or to hell
she couldn't care

she just did not- does not wish
snails sharing earth with her

and maybe somewhere else on earth
but not in her garden, growing green

not among the things
in her wonderful backyard

she'd select who is allowed to enter
or allowed to stay

we were guests and happy to be
welcome to select- to collect almonds

fallen upon the back yard lawn,
upon the green carpet, wall to wall

we could share what she had to offer
all she had to offer, snails could not

it was Sunday, a wet afternoon
she decided to spare her guests
having to witness this execution after all

reprieve not because the Privy Council intervened
snails are guilty and condemned without a trial

or guilty already because of sins
snails commit habitually

she was angry, one could see, could tell
veiled but it was obvious, evident

they'd done her something in the past
some snail or snails had wronged her

these ones or their grand or great grandparents
she was going to prevent these ones
having great grandchildren

her weight, so much greater than snails weigh
her house stronger than the one
within which snails abide

she was going to stand upon them
rub them- wipe her feet upon them

dirty the bottom of her shoes
with snail meat, snail shells, snail slime

she was going to enjoy the music
that she made - but then decided

oh maybe not on Sunday
maybe not in front of guests
she was entertaining

three poets who dropped in
who happened by
